About Me
Mariet Terblanche
I’m a psychologist, a partner, a parent, a friend, an employee, a colleague, and an employer—roles that continue to teach me about the depth and complexity of human connection. With three children at different life stages—from university to primary school—I have a deep appreciation for the challenges and changes that come with family life, relationships, and personal growth. These experiences continue to shape my understanding and approach in the therapeutic space.
I hold a Master of Arts degree in Industrial Psychology and a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology, both completed with distinction through North-West University. I initially worked as an Industrial Psychologist for eight years before transitioning fully into the field of Clinical Psychology.
My practical clinical training included an internship and community service year at Witrand Specialised Psychiatric Hospital. There, I gained extensive experience working in a variety of clinical settings, including the child and adolescent ward, the neuro- and rehabilitation unit, as well as the male and female mood and psychosis wards. I provided therapy and consultations to both inpatients and outpatients.
After completing my community service, I was appointed full-time at Witrand Specialised Psychiatric Hospital. In 2013, I was promoted to Principal Clinical Psychologist and currently head the Clinical Psychology Department. I’ve now been working in the field of Clinical Psychology for more than 18 years.
I remain connected to academic life through an honorary appointment at Wits University, where I provide supervision to registrars when needed. I also occasionally lecture postgraduate students at North-West University in both the Industrial and Clinical Psychology departments.
At my private practice in Potchefstroom, I offer in-person sessions as well as online services for clients outside Potchefstroom or for those who prefer the flexibility of virtual consultations.
My journey across various domains of psychology has shaped a deep appreciation for the complexity and resilience of the human experience. I approach my work with empathy, curiosity, and respect, offering clients a space where they can explore, heal, and grow at their own pace. Whether in-person or online, my goal is to create a therapeutic environment that feels safe, supportive, and meaningful. I’m also actively involved in two study groups that focus on psychoanalytic and other psychological literature—an enriching part of my professional life that helps me stay engaged with evolving ideas and deepen my clinical understanding.
